Workshop - How THRIVE!
“The Lived Experience of Positive Emotion”
Problems and Issues Addressed by the Workshop
- Most people believe that they are living an OK life, that there is nothing particularly negative about it, but they also know that they are not flourishing or realizing their full potential.
- Happy people are more attractive than pessimistic or neutral people in friendship, love and in business. If we can learn how to regularly experience positive emotion and so attract the right people to our lives, we will be successful and experience frequent well-being and prosperity.
- People want to be happy and flourish now, not ‘one day’ when they have gained enough experience, when their ship finally comes in or when they are too old to enjoy life.
- Some people have experienced so much misfortune that they have learned to expect failure and they now find themselves in a state of hopelessness. Once you have learned to be hopeless, it is difficult to find the courage and energy to hope and to have optimistic thoughts.
- Good relationships are core to human well-being and we see that people who have meaningful, positive relationships with others are happier than those who do not. Relationships really do matter, but it is difficult to make our relationships work for us.
Profile of People Who Will Benefit from Attending the Workshop
- You believe that you deserve exceptional business success, supportive relationships and self fulfillment, but thus far all your efforts have yielded only average results.
- You are not certain of exactly what your personal strengths are, or how you could use these strengths to advance your professional success and increase your experience of well-being
- Your experience of positive emotions like peace, gratitude, satisfaction, pleasure, inspiration, hope, curiosity, or love is infrequent and have been mostly accidental up to this point. You would like to know how to build a life where these positive emotions are a part of your normal daily experiences.
- You realize that achievement is an important thing that contributes to your ability to flourish. You strive to better yourself in some way, but it is difficult to know what to focus on: whether you are seeking to master a skill, excel at sport, achieve a valuable goal, or win in some competitive event.
- You believe that happiness energizes people to achieve their goals and to excel at whatever they do. You would like to regularly, predictably and at will enjoy pleasurable engagement in a situation, task or project to such an extent that time seems to stop, you lose your sense of self and you concentrate intensely on the present.
Consequences of Not Addressing Issues
- If you are not thriving, you are merely existing; life is essentially passing you by and you often experience frustration, anger, disappointment and poor self esteem.
- Your relationships suffer because you are not experiencing sufficient positive emotions to be attractive and supportive to others.
- Thoughts of helplessness crowd your mind and make it difficult for you to find the energy and insight to focus on changing pessimistic habits and behaviors that do not serve you.
- You find your financial situation and sport performance difficult to cope with and you don’t know how to turn it around.
- You suffer from a lack of energy and motivation and you can’t remember what it feels like to accomplish something important or to reach a special goal.
- Your unhappiness or neutral existence frustrates you and strains relationships at work , sport, family life, friendships and spiritual relationships.
- Your self-talk becomes increasingly negative and you feel as if you are losing control over the direction of your life.
Constraints that Prevent the Issues from Being Addressed
If, after having tried several times to overcome pessimism and hopelessness, one does not succeed, it is easy to become disheartened, to lack courage or sufficient energy to try again. People in this state typically cannot recognize solutions, they have lost objectivity about themselves and their potential, they often give up on their dreams and may end up living the rest of their lives unfulfilled, without joy, meaning and authenticity in their day to day activities. They may substitute happiness for money or possessions and may find themselves even more hopeless if they should lose their money, status or possessions due to misfortune. They could face relationship break-ups and normal adversity easily turns to depression.
They may avoid addressing the issues, claiming to be too busy, too broke or may say that they don’t know what to do or where to begin to make things better. They may blame parents, partners or others for their hopeless, pessimistic situation and the insufficient happiness in their lives.
All these reasons prevent them from addressing the very issues that are within their means to remedy and that will make a positive difference in their lives.
Some people act as if everything is fine, that they are happy when they are far from it. Others accept life without positive emotion and it’s associated benefits as their lot and do not try to change it. Even others attend courses, read self help books and may even consult fortune tellers to give then a magical solution to become happy and fulfilled. Many people turn to religion in search of well-being and happiness. Some of these options work for some people, but the solutions these options represent may be packaged in such a way that it is difficult to extract a simple ‘how to deal with adversity’ recipe from it to apply to all aspects of one’s life.
